The Prayer of Jabez

The Prayer of Jabez

This book is an elaborated explanation of the meaning of just one short but powerful verse in the Bible. That verse is 1 Chronicles 4:10. “Jabez called out to the God of Israel saying, “Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain”, So God granted him what he requested.” The first unique thing that sticks out about this verse is where it’s located. It’s tucked away in chapter mostly containing lineage, the boring stuff (Ashur son of Tekoa, son of Helah, son of Naarah, ect). So Dr. Wilkinson’s argument on the importance of this verse is pretty clear. It was important enough for the Historian prophet (Ezra, I think) writing to stop and insert in into the Bible. I liked it because he warns that  we need to be on guard from temptation when we are blessed, not just when during a moral trial (keep me from evil). To me this means to humble yourself. Check yourself constantly for arrogance.

Favorite Quote: I remind them that miracles don’t have to break natural law to be a supernatural event.
